Abstract
The decisive role of production potential in the viability, efficient functioning and competitiveness of railway enterprises is determined. It is proved that effective formation, use and development of production potential is impossible without the construction of an optimal system of strategic management. In order to increase the level of use of railroad production potential, conceptual provisions for the formation and implementation of an appropriate strategy are proposed, the basic principle of which is to ensure the optimal use of the production potential of enterprises in the railway industry, which allowed to identify the main strategic alternatives (modernization, transformation and reduction / elimination), the choice of which is carried out on the basis of criteria of conformity, efficiency and specialization of parameters of production potential. Increasing the efficiency of the use of production potential is inextricably linked with the search and implementation of appropriate reserves, the search and implementation of which is proposed to be carried out through the use of tools of economical production.
