Abstract

The article discusses the changing role of coal-fired power plants in the largest national energy systems of the world in the context of the rapid development of a competitive environment and an active transition to low-carbon energy. The ways of their technological adaptation to new economic and environmental challenges are also discussed. Particular attention is paid to specific development conditions of coal-fired power plants in the Unified Energy System of Russia, taking into account their inter fuel competition with gas and nuclear power plants. The problem of creating incentives for the development of coal-fired power plants as a component of ensuring the requirements of the energy security of Russia and its individual regions is discussed.
