Abstract
Background Main cause of premature equipment running out of service in the oil and gas industry is surface corrosion processes. Development of corrosion processes is closely linked to high corrosiveness of fluids, constantly present in the oilfield equipment. Corrosiveness of the medium is caused by the presence therein of solid impurities, dissolved acidic gases, ions of salts, and corrosive microorganisms which contribute directly to corrosive reactions, or are indirectly involved in the processes of metal depolarization or dissolution. Treatment lowering medium’s aggressiveness is an effective way to reduce the rate of the oilfield equipment corrosion. This can be achieved by removal of corrosive agents from the medium or by weakening their ability to interact with the metal of equipment. Aims and Objectives Construct a device to control the corrosiveness of the working medium by changing its electrochemical parameters. Calculate the parameters of the device to control the electrochemical parameters of the medium with a view to application of the device in the oil and gas industry. Empirically assess the effectiveness of controlling electrochemical parameters of the treated medium. Methods Method developed by the authors to control the electrochemical parameters of field mediums is used as the main method of testing. It allows change of the medium electrochemical parameters, i.e. pH and redox-potential. The prepared model of formation water and a device for changing the electrochemical parameters of liquid media were used in conducting laboratory and bench tests. Measurement of the potential on the metal surface was performed using silver chloride reference electrode. The content of calcium ions was determined by complexometric method. pH and redox potential values were measured using a pH-meter device («Mettler», Toledo). Results Tests have shown high efficiency of the developed method and apparatus for controlling electrochemical parameters of field medium. Calculations resulted in correct design of a pilot device for testing in field conditions. Investigations showed that the treatment of the prepared field medium model changed pH and redox potential, which lowered the corrosion rate of metal samples corrosion and reduced inorganic salt deposition on the surface of the samples.
