Abstract

“Journal Citation Reports” (JCR) is a database for the evaluation of journals. JCR was only available on microfiche until 1995, when it was made available on CD-ROM. This CD-ROM has a lot of advantages including sorting and filtering systems. Since 1996, users at the Shikata Medical Library have been able to use this CD-ROM. Researchers can make use of this CD-ROM for searching to contribute their papers for publication, and staff members of the library can make use of this CD-ROM to search for journals requested by users. As this CD-ROM had been known to only a few staff members in the Okayama University Medical School, further explanation and information about this CD-ROM was required for users. According to the questionnaires, it was found that many of the researchers had no opportunity to make use of this CD-ROM, although they had wanted to use it. Our survey has also revealed that researchers who have used this CD-ROM find it convenient, especially because they are able to make their own personal ranking list of the data they wish to obtain. Therefore, as librarians, it is important for us to make a greater effort to advertise this CD-ROM so that it may be used by as many researchers as possible, and for us to study new methods for use and application of this CD-ROM.
