Abstract
The purpose of this study is to clarify the usage patterns and semantic functions when ‘Jinjja’ is used as a discourse marker in spoken discourse. ‘Jinjja’ can be used alone as a discourse marker or with other vocabulary or expressions in combination. The case where ‘Jinjja’ is used with other vocabulary or expressions could be divided into two types: ‘Exclamation Combination Form’, ‘Tubular Combination Form’, ‘Pronoun Combination Form’, ‘Adverb Combination Form’, and ‘Vocabulary Combination Form’. The other is that ‘Jinjja’ is used with an expression. The semantic functions as a discourse marker of ‘Jinjja’ could be divided into ‘emphasis’, ‘self-expression modification and supplementation’, ‘conversion and return of topic’, ‘buying time’, ‘reaction’, and’expression of emotion’. This study is meaningful in that it analyzed the usage patterns and semantic functions of the ‘Jinjja’ used by Korean speakers as a discourse marker. It is also valuable as basic data that can be used in the field of Korean language education. (Yonsei University)
