Abstract

The article deals with the problems concerning English vowels. Both standard and traditional forms of pronunciation as well as innovational ones in gender aspect were revealed in the speech of British youth. The subject of the present study is the gender variation in the speech activity of modern British youth. The choice of the vocal variation component of the British standard of pronunciation in the realization of the youth as the object of the research is conditioned by insufficient study of the given phenomenon in linguistics. The material of the study were records (using a computer program Audacity) of the samples of quasi-spontaneous solid monologic utterances (response cue of an interview) of five English-informants (3 men and 2 women). The purpose of the research consists in the studying in gender aspect the tendencies of changing of the English vocal system within the youth speech, in identifying general and specific trends of phonetic changes in the speech of British youth. To achieve this goal the study has the following tasks:1) to analyze the peculiarities of the vocal constituent of the speech of modern English educated youth in comparison with the already registered changes in the works of the UK's leading phoneticians;2) to consider the impact of such extralinguistic factor as gender on the peculiarities of youth pronunciation.
