Abstract

Plexiform schwannoma is a rare benign neurogenic tumor. Multinodular schwannoma is a subdivision and occurs in the proximal nerve trunk. We report a case of multinodular schwannoma arising from the left sciatic nerve. The patient was a 42-year-old man, who complained of tumor in the left posterior thigh. Pathological diagnosis by open biopsy performed at another hospital indicated cellular neurilemmoma. MRI revealed multiple tumors in the sciatic nerve, which was iso-intensity on T1WI, high intensity on T2WI, and was enhanced with Gd-DTPA. The tumor was multinodular and was composed of 46 tumors in the sciatic nerve. It consisted of multiple nodules surrounded by a perineurium-like tissue. The histological feature was identical with Antoni A and B type schwannoma. At 7 months after resection of the tumor, the patient was free from neurological deficit and recurrence.
