Abstract

The article examines the biography and life of Abbé Christophe Gaudefroy (1878–1971), a French Catholic priest, an outstanding mineralogist and crystallographer. Father Gaudefroy belonged to the circle of French Catholic intellectuals in the priesthood and was a close friend of Father Teilhard de Chardin and Abbé Henri Breuil. After an academic career in Paris (Institut Catholique and Sorbonne University), Abbé Gaudefroy moved to Morocco in 1949 for mineralogical research. He discovered 4 new minerals and has the mineral “gaudefroyite” named after him, which has a unique chemical formula and crystal structure.
