Abstract
The paper aims to examine I. S. Turgenev’s perception formation in China at the beginning of the XX century, to reveal the conditions under which the Chinese readers got acquainted with Turgenev’s works. The article shows how specificity of the political, economic, cultural and literary situation in China at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries influenced I. S. Turgenev’s perception. Scientific originality of the study is determined by the fact that the researcher introduces into scientific circulation new theoretical material - literary-critical articles of Liang Qichao and Zhou Zuoren, which allows analyzing the initial stage of I. S. Turgenev’s perception in China. The research findings are as follows: the author proves that at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, the Chinese public tended to accentuate political and ideological aspects of I. S. Turgenev’s creative work. The Chinese reader appreciated the fact that the writer raised the problem of nihilism and political opposition. Later on, the Chinese audience discovered an artistic aspect in I. S. Turgenev’s creative heritage.
