Abstract

Objectives The purposes of this study were to investigate the sequential mediating effects of emotional clarity and problem-focused coping on the relationship between mindfulness and psychological well being in university students. Methods Participants were 320 university students collected through a on-line survey company panel. The measures are the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, Psychological Well-Being Scale, Trait Meta-Mood Scale, Korean version of the Brief Coping Orientation to the Problems Experienced. The data were analyzed with SPSS 21.0 and SPSS Process Macro program. Results First, the level of mindfulness had positive effects on emotional clarity, problem-focused coping, psychological well being. Second, emotional clarity predicted problem-focused coping, psychological well being positively. Third, problem-focused coping predicted psychological well being positively. Fourth, it was found that the indirect path sequentially mediated by emotional clarity and problem-focused coping was significant in the relationship between mindfulness and psychological well being. Conclusions This study suggests that intervention plan for emotional clarity and problem-focused coping should be prepared along with intervention for improvement of mindfulness to enforce psychological well being of university students. This conclusion indicates that the study provides theoretical basis for research of interventions to help university students increase psychological well being.
