Abstract

In this paper, we compose a simplified formula based on an equivalent linear analysis method in order to predict nonlinear responses of multi-story buildings. By use of the formula, we discuss the most appropriate seismic force intensity index corresponded with building responses and damage. Conclusions are summarized as follows. (1) When buildings perform the same responses, relations between those responses and seismic force intensity indices are divided into two types corresponding to the boundary number of stories N_0 defined by the characteristics of seismic motion. (2) When the number of stories is lower than N_0, the values of seismic force intensity indices vary with the number of stories and the characteristics of seismic motion. And as the number of stories is lower, the building responses and damage corresponding to the same values of seismic force intensity indices are less. (3) When the number of stories is higher than N_0, the peak ground velocity is constant. Therefore, the velocity is appropriate to evaluate building responses.
