Abstract

From this study, it was found that the capability of abrasive retention in a CBN wheel gave a remarkable influence on the grinding performance. The grinding performance was studied by a cylindrical plunge grinding for the test wheels which had different abrasive retention levels. From the results it is concluded that the following is a key to improve the grinding performance and that these exactly result in the improvement of abrasive retention capability. (1) An optimum TSUKIDASHIRYO in a resin bonded CBN wheel will be about 30μm. (2) In a vitrified bonded CBN wheel only CBN abrasive should be bonded. (3) Grade should be harder. (4) Grain size should be coarser. (5) A. vitrified bond which has a chemical bonding is rather recommended than a resin bond of mechanical retention. By actualizing the above items, a dressing interval of 265.0 mm2/mm and a grinding ratio of 27000 (300 times of a conventional wheel), over 8 times and 2.5 times of an initial wheel respectively, were obtained. Also a high performance vitrified bonded CBN wheel, which could be easily dressed by a single point diamond dresser compared with a resin bonded CBN wheel, was successfully developed.
