Abstract
The biophilic design underlines importance of human connection with nature and leads to positive effects on occupants’ perceived attention, creativity and productivity, improved satisfaction and wellbeing. Since biophilia has potential to influence people’s psychological and emotional health, people are interested in applying biophilic design in hospital setting due to the high stressful context for patients, their families as well as healthcare professionals. Especially for lobby ares in hospital, because the functional boundaries of waiting area, circulation, reception areas are overlapped and interrelated and many visitors including patients stay in the areas, it is important to provide less stressful environment. The purpose of this study is to investigate biophilic design elements appeared in large hospital lobby areas according to each sub areas and analyze how biophilic design applied to each designated functional area. For this study, case studies were conducted for four large hospitals in Seoul. In each functional area of lobby, biophilic design features were checked and its characteristics were analyzed. It is found that interior planing adopted frequently in rest and waiting areas. Window size, shape, location, opening influenced quality of daylight and airflow of the lobby areas. Natural materials and colors are frequently applied in waiting areas, rest areas, adjacent commercial areas and circulation areas. Natural patterns or motifs were hardly applied in main circulation areas and elevator halls. Not only natural light, natural color, natural material and natural motif, but also variation and diversity in nature are important characterstics of biophilic design application.
