Abstract

The article defines the tendencies of development and peculiarities of functioning of the banking system of Ukraine in 2014-2018, assesses the current domestic banking sector state of development on the basis of the domestic banks main indicators analysis. In today's conditions, the banking system of Ukraine is going through a difficult period. A number of problems from previous crises that have not been resolved continue to adversely affect the banking system, making it ineffective and unstable, vulnerable to various shocks. The stages of development of the banking system as well as the prerequisites for crisis phenomena are characterized, the quantitative composition and structure of the banking sector are assessed, the growth rates of the bank loan portfolio are determined, the reasons for insufficient volumes of bank lending are revealed. Measures to activate the development of the banking sector as well as to enhance its role in the processes of economic growth financing are proposed. Among them: the need to apply a system of measures aimed at diversifying banking assets, increasing the level of capitalization of the banking sector, creating conditions for attracting investment in the domestic banking system, which will minimize the negative factors impact on banking activities and create conditions for accelerated development of the Ukrainian banking system. The study proved that an important task of the domestic banking system is the need to further harmonize banking legislation as soon as possible in accordance with the requirements and standards of the Basel III system, as well as to apply the operational experience of banks from other countries, which can be successfully adapted in Ukraine.
