Abstract

This paper describes conceptual metaphor theory and the cognitive neural network, showing that literary language has a great place in cognitive linguistics and cognitive science. Lakoff and Johnson argue that metaphor is widely pervaded in behaviors and thoughts as well as in everyday language and not just literary language. Paul Churchland suggests the theory of representation from results of cognitive neural network. According to the representational theory, our representations of our world and our selves can be represented as the locations of phase state spaces with the movements of the neurons. This paper attempts to analyze the role of representations and metaphors in Robert Frost’s poetry. I raise some problems based on both the conceptual Metaphor theory and the theory of cognitive neural network, I try to analyze cognitive theories to a poem titled “The Silken Tent.” Therefore, this research suggests that critical ideas in consilience of the studies should raise questions as to our fundamental principles and give them new creative theories.
