The article considers various kinds of details which contribute to identification of the author’s concept of the man and the world. The research is novel in that it turns to studying the artistic detail in R. Töpffer’s short story, which has not been previously studied in the Russian literary criticism. The attained results have shown that the work is dominated by portrait and psychological details performing compositional, depictive, psychological, culturological and other functions. Notably, one detail can perform several functions whereas different kinds of details can perform a common one.
