Abstract

This study aimed to determine that amla (Phyllanthus emblica L.) extract prevents and alleviates hair loss. We measured cell proliferative activity, 5α- reductase inhibitory, TGF-β1 and DKK-1, IGF-1 & VEGF effect on human dermal papilla cells to investigate therapeutic effect of the amla extract. The cell proliferative activity in human dermal papilla cells was observed to be most prominent in the range of 50μg/ml. Also, amla extract decreased the expression of 5α-reductase in a dose dependent manner in human dermal papilla cells. And IGF-1 & VEGF which were known to accelerate the differentiation and growth of human dermal papilla cells was increased by amla extract in a dose dependent manner. Taken together, these results suggest that amla extract has hair growth promoting effect and it may be a potent candidate for the prevention of hair loss.
