Abstract

This study was conducted to compare and analyze occupational stress and satisfaction levels of the seafarers in two different groups and to provide data for effective shipping industry resource management. Survey was conducted in Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology from June to July 2021 and data was obtained from 119 Ocean-going seafarers and 122 Coastal seafarers. The ocean-going seafarers had higher job stress and lower job satisfaction than the coastal seafarers with statistical significance. The younger, single, and low experience seafarers had higher job stress and lower job satisfaction in two groups. Negative correlation was found between job satisfaction and stress in both Ocean-going seafarers and Coastal seafarers. Seafarer rotation normalization, shortening boarding period, minimizing the disconnection of land communication and seafarer job reassessment is suggested to enhance job satisfaction and to reduce job stress.
