Abstract

The article is devoted to the theoretical understanding of the two main principles of reflecting reality, which are denoted by different terms: realistic and non-realistic art, realistic and symbolic, realistic and idealistic, art of primary and secondary conventionality. The reasons for the disappearance of the first three pairs of terms from the terminological field and the motivation for the formation of the theory of conventions are considered. Along with terminological preferences, the issue of further differentiation of the methods of non-realistic art and the formation of a common approach to its study is being actualized.
