Abstract

According to the currently reviewed Child Life, <Agachagi> for younger children was published from 1930 to 1939. For more than 10 years, the illustrations of Agachagi were drawn by Kim Dong-gil, Lim Hong-eun, and Lim Dong-eun. This article summarized the writings and illustrations of <Agachagi> and attempted to analyze the headings and textual illustrations of <Agachagi> drawn by Kim Dong-gil from 1930 to 1935.
As confirmed, Kim Dong-gil was a member of the Korean Society of Jesus and was in charge of writing, painting, and editing the Agachagi from March 1930 to October 1935. In Agachagi, which Kim Dong-gil was in charge of, the story of providing comic-style writing, play, and new knowledge was added, and “Sangtagi” and “Wish of the Month” were irregularly published. The story was mainly composed of traditional fairy tale characters and factual fairy tale characters, and writings and fables with personality traits, adapted fairy tales, dream stories, and religious stories were often added. The song was mainly in the form of a children’s song.
Kim Dong-gil’s illustrations are largely divided into headings and body illustrations, and headings were often used in a decorative sense. In the early 1930s, among the textual illustrations, the end of the text mainly served to decorate the remaining space.
Kim Dong-gil’s illustrations of the text included awkward characters in the beginning and many illustrations that lacked sophistication in detailed descriptions. As time accumulates, Kim Dong-gil’s illustrations mature and have three characteristics. First, it shows a new perspective with an experimental image, Second, it builds the personal character and atmosphere of the work with light and shade, and Third, it shows modern scenery with perspective. Interestingly, when Kim Dong-gil was in charge of, religious writings are rare in Agachagi and the character rarely appears in illustrations.
