Abstract
As the modern society enters the age of aging, the number of patients with degenerative brain disease is increasing. However, currently no effective treatment has been developed. The mechanism of apoptosis caused by glutamate toxicity is known as one of the main causes of degenerative brain disease. In this study, subtropical biological substances were investigated to analyze their antioxidant activity and neuroprotective effects. As a result of DPPH radical scavenging activity of 10 subtropical plant extracts, Buchanania glabra Wall extract showed the highest radical scavenging activity. Additionally, a study on glutamate-induced apoptosis in HT22 cells showed that the extract had a concentration-dependent neuroprotective effect. Therefore, it is considered that the Buchanania glabra Wall extract can be used in research for the treatment and prevention of degenerative brain diseases.
