Abstract

Expert systems, which is a branch of artificial intelligence, has been applied in many areas, such as business, military, and training etc. In this article, the educational implications of expert systems were explored in three directions : as a tutor, tutee, and tool. In the first place, expert system can be used as an intelligent tutor. In their structure s and functions, intelligent computer as sisted instruction(ICAI) is very much like expert systems. In asense, ICAI is a kind of expert systems. Among several parts of ICAI, knowledge base system is most developed area. However, we can expect better ICAI packages if we develop intelligent job aids which is adapting expert system. As a tutee, building expert system, more specifically the proecess of building knowledge base in asubject matter, can purify the student s`` knowledge and give an opportunity to solve problems with interest. In this approach, we can use any expert system shell which is a tool for building expert systems. As a tool, expert systems can be used like word processor s or data base programs. However, expert systems are different from many other application programs in that they can be a tool exploring an expert``s knowledge and intellectual structures. The above three ways of using expert systems in education need to be studied in more depth. And also more effort s of educators are needed in this area to cooperate with computer scientist s and cognitive scientist.
