Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal that there are cognitive factors as well as grammatical factors in determining English word order and to explain how human’s conceptualization affects the structures of a language. Through Figure-Ground organization, the conceptual asymmetry inherent in English sentences was examined, and the correlation between it and the word order is the following; in compound nouns, Ground precedence alignment can be seen. The verb which functions as a complement in the infinitival clause can be designated as “Figure”, whereas the verb which functions as a modifier can be designated as “Ground”. The more objective and intrinsic property of the adjective, the closer it is to the head noun. In the case of adverbs, the subject-oriented adverbs are located close to the conceptualizer, and the pure manner adverbs are located to the right of the verb.
