Abstract

This article belongs to the domain of studying urban «super texts» that is relevant in literary criticism. The subject of the research is the literary image of Barnaul, the capital of Altai Krai. The material for analysis is the lyrics of the leading Barnaul poets, in which the object of writer's introspection is the city in historical perspective and modern reality. The methodological basis of the article is the study of «urban texts» by representatives of the Tartu-Moscow semiotic school (V.N. Toporov, Yu.M. Lotman) and their modern followers. Two basic principles to construct a text about the city are defined: local history and a psychological one. Historically, geographically, psychologically, biographically specific implementations of universal figurative constructions of the urban text are described. They are a city as a man, a book, the center of the world, the hell, twin cities and the opposition «capital – periphery / province». Peculiarities of the author's urban texts (M.I. Yudalevich, N. Nikolenkova) are defined in the context of local lyrics. The semantic halo of the city is formulated. It is created by means of language game (pun) with its name. The texts of V. Vysotsky and A. Voznesensky, who once visited the city of Barnaul, are mentioned in the study, as well.
