Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of identifying an art school in the military settlement of the county town of Chuguev in the Slobozhanshchina. The importance of the topic is determined, on the one hand, by the enormous achievements of the Chuguev artists, among whom the name of I. E. Repin is known, and on the other hand, by the enormous losses suffered by the Chuguev district and the entire Slobozhanshchina both during the years of general atheization and during the Great Patriotic War. Therefore, in this study, it was very relevant to turn to the historical analysis of the events that caused the emergence of such a unique phenomenon as the Chuguev art school, and, together with it, a whole galaxy of fine artists and icon painters. On the basis of historical and analytical methods of research, the concept of the “Chuguev art school” is substantiated for the first time. The myth of the Western European and Dnieper influence on the culture of this region of Slobozhanshchina, which was brought by the settlers, is debunked. Its direct connection with the Moscow Church culture and the continuation of its traditions, as well as the influence of secular art, are traced.
