Abstract

Today, Koreans’ image of Germany is represented by ‘National Prosperity and Military Power’. This is not an image that was created in a moment. Among them, the image o f a strong army cannot originate from the ‘Miracle on the Rhine’. It is certainly undeniable that the image of strong military power which started World WarⅠ · Ⅱ affected modern Koreans.BR However, this image also relates to Koreans’ perception on Germany before the war. It is because, above all, Korea, on the way to becoming a sovereign nation by overcoming both internal and external crises, found Germany was a model country to follow. This can be confirmed through the actions of the government at that time. The government of King Gojong and the new generation of literacy class took note that Prussia won the war against France through the policy (to enhance the national prosperity and defense) carried out by social leaders and the unity of German people in a short period of time, in spite of the collapse of the state system after the invasion of Napoleon military. In this sense, the government disseminated the German-related works including the Chronicle of the Franco-Prussian War. In other words, they put an effort to share the concrete image of sovereign state with general public by conveying the case of Germany. Furthermore, they emphasized that the Great Han Empire inherited a universal East Asian civilization with the Qing dynasty, as Germany inherited Rome together with Austria.BR Since then, this image of Germany has remained in the minds of Koreans even after 1910, when the nation collapsed. -Although the image of ‘Military Power’ has weakened on account of “The Miracle on the Rhine”- This has been going on to the long-cherished desire of modern Koreans for the establishment of a sovereign state through the ‘National Prosperity and Military Power’.
