Abstract

The Khakass heroic epos includes a great number of ancient mythological motives and images. The article aims to examine certain mythological aspects in the images of the Khakass heroic epos. For that purpose the author analyses unpublished heroic legends recorded after the narrators K. A. Bastaev - “Old Khara Khan on a Dark Bay Horse” (1949), “Altyn Sabakh on a Light-Bay Horse” (1949), Е. P. Miyagashev - “Khara Khan on a Dark Bay Horse” (1949) and S. I. Kongarov - “Akh Khan on a Light-Bay Horse” (1958). In the mentioned legends, the mythological component includes the description of the “Age of Creation”, the motive of childlessness and closely related motives of miraculous impregnation and miraculous birth, motives of lycanthropy associated with totemic myths and demonological conceptions of the Khakass people.
