Abstract

The article examines inter-genre interaction of a fairy tale and an epic work. By the material of the rich Azerbaijani folk literature, the author analyses the problems of mutual influence of these genres. The motive of a hero’s miraculous birth is very frequent in national folk literatures, but in the Azerbaijani fairy tales, it acquires original interpretation. “The Tale of Ibrahim” and the dastan “Nadjaf and Perizad” are analysed in the comparative-contrastive aspect; the dastans “Selim Shah” and “Ali Khan and Peri” are also examined, similarities and differences between dastans and fairy tales are identified. Determining common storylines and motives, the author reveals certain peculiarities of creating a fairy tale and an epic work.
