Abstract

One of the latest trends in the shipping industry is digitalization, which, as it evolves, can transform the maritime industry by taking advantage of the benefits of information, communications, the internet and artificial intelligence. The software ultimately improves the quality of manual operations and the end result. Technology providers are trying to enter this industry, which is still conservative about digitization. They argue that the industry can benefit from this through the coordination of information technology and operational technology systems, both on land and for the commercial operation of ships and fleets, and through a combination of new methods of exchanging data between various stakeholders in ship and port operations. In fact, these changes are already taking place as physical and digital convergence develops. This article takes a look at both the traditional and the modern look at the shipping industry. The study analyzed some examples of the positive changes that smart navigation can bring to service providers. The authors also note that in recent years, the concept of “Uber for brokerage activities” has been widely discussed. This article discusses several reasons why this concept is challenging the market and what a company can do to prepare for the inevitable evolution of the brokerage market.
