Abstract

Over the past 100 years, there has been a progressive increase in the level of serum uric acid (UA). Modern scientific data suggest that the impact of hyperuricemia (HU) goes beyond the classical gout manifestations. UA has both oxidant and antioxidant properties, which determines its multidirectional effect on the human body as a whole. High serum UA levels may be a sign of increased purine metabolism and decreased adenosine transmission. Currently, there is evidence concerning the impact of all purine metabolism components on the mental sphere. The article discusses the pathogenetic association of purine metabolism disorders with the mental disorders and the possibility of considering UA as one of the targets for drug therapy of mental disorders. The results of recent studies show that allopurinol can be an important drug therapy component in patients with mental disorders. Accessibility and a good safety profile can also be the basis for further drug studies regarding the prospects of its wide practical use in patients with mental disorders and HU.
