Abstract

Territorial protection system(搜討制度) regularly applied in the Late Joseon start ed in 1694(the 20th year of King Sookjong reign), as Jang Han-sang (張漢相) was sent to Ulleung-do(鬱陵島). Jang Han-sang and his entourages left rock inscription (刻石文) to record their activities. This is a sure and direct proof of territorial protectio n system. There has been partial survey and study about rock inscription for territorial protection system in Ulleung-do. But comprehensive study has not existed until now so that approximate situation only could be known. The thesis compared and reviewe d existing survey and study for rock inscription of territorial protection system. The author paid attention to content of rock inscription discovered, and examined their characteristics. In 1711(the 37th year of Sookjong reign), Park Seok-chang(朴錫昌) left 'Dodong -ri Sinmyo year rock inscription in Ulleung-do', only 17 years later from start of territorial protection system. 'Ulleung-do figure'(鬱陵島圖形) made by Park Seokchang also shows same content. And his 'Ulleung-do figure' includes location of rock inscription. Such location indication was shown on the map produced in the Late Joseon. Rock inscription by Park Seok-chang is not only the oldest one but also is deemed to be the first rock inscription among extant rock inscriptions for territorial protection.Number of rock inscription for territorial protection in Ulleung-do discovered until now is 8, largely classified. By period, 2 in 1700s, 5 in 1800s, 1 in 1900s. In detail, there are rock inscriptions made by 14 different officers in charge of territorial protection. By location, 4 by 8 officers in Taeha-ri, Seo-myeon. 3 by 4 officers in Dodong, Ulleung-eup. 1 by 2 officers in Hyunpo-ri, Buk-myeon. But only 4 rock inscriptions by 7 officers are extant, which is 50% of rock inscriptio ns discovered until now. There are some rock inscriptions which cannot be located caused by development of Ulleung-do etc. or are illegible due to severe wear. Residents of Ulleung-do say that there were a number of rock inscriptions so that there could be a possibility to discover rock inscriptions more. Rock inscriptions for territorial protection system show not only position and name of officer in charge of territorial protection(搜討官) but also position and name of his entourages. Official position etc. carved on the rock inscriptions can make it possible to know scale and details of territorial protection through comparison and review with documentary sources. Rock inscriptions are direct proof for efforts to protect Ulleung-do and Dok-do in the Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, it is necessary to survey further and study comprehensi vely.
