Abstract

The paper deals with the use of phrases with two or more prepositions in the predicative position in Bulgarian. The study is an attempt to systematize the different cases: on the one hand, not all prepositions found in adjacent position form a phrase (usually such constructions are the result of movement at the surface syntax level), and on the other – the construction may be elliptical (in this case the first preposition heads an elliptical noun or adverbial phrase which has as a constituent the second PP). There are also constructions with a PP selecting another PP as its complement. The main goal is to identify the possible combinations, paying attention to the syntactic and semantic properties of the prepositions and their constituents. Keywords: prepositions, predicative phrases, syntactic transformations, constituent movement, ellipsis
