스페인어 담화 표지에 대한 재고찰 : Entonces, Pues, 그리고 Pero를 중심으로

Abstract

This study reconsiders the Spanish discourse markers entonces and pues with respect to their syntactic distribution and their pragmatic functions. We note that it is not sufficient to understand entonces and pues considered as mere discourse markers in a number of discourse contexts in which it is also needed to consider entonces and pues as connective particles in syntax. We suggest that some pragmatic functions of entonces and pues can be derived from the syntactic structure in which they appear as complementizers of adverbial clauses, in particular when those discourse markers convey the conditional meaning and the consecutive meaning. We also discuss some sentence-final instances of entonces and pues, which are related to the function of continuing the discourse, and provide an account of its non-canonical word order in terms of stylistic inversion, along the lines of the sentence-final connective particle pero in certain varieties of American Spanish.
