Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the operational-strategic deployment of the armed forces of the German army in the fist months of the Great war, the formation of french strike groups, the position
of neutrality of the belgian leadership and the reasons for England's entry into the war. The general nature of the battles is revealed in two battles – the battles for Liege and the attack on Alsace and Lorraine.
It is emphasized that the success of the battle is determined not by the quality of the fortress walls, but by the technical power of the army and the number of soldiers. It is concluded that the results of the first battles on the Western front indicate that peace is possible only after the complete military defeat of one
 of the sides.
