Abstract

The research is aimed at defining national and cultural aspects of movie titles allowing us to describe their artistic peculiarity. The article tackles the problems of equivalence and adequacy depending on the chosen method of translation, reveals special characteristics of Russian movies’ titles in translation taking into account linguistic and extralinguistic factors, and analyses the reasons for ‘incorrect’ translation, which is not in line with the director’s intention. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it analyses translations of Russian movie titles in the linguistic and cultural context for the first time. As a result, the research has defined the common problems that translators face and has suggested the ways to cope with them.
