Abstract
The article points out that in the current situation the task of formulating and implementing the national idea of Russia becomes paramount. The main quality of such an idea should be a consolidating character and a high value potential. The author agrees that patriotism should be the basis of the national idea, but clarifies the importance of the scientific and philosophical definition of Motherland as an object of patriotism in order to avoid politicization and correlation of the national idea with the interests of specific socio-political groups. The debatable aspects of the definition of the term “Motherland” are analyzed, and the methodological prerequisites for their solution are determined.
