Abstract
The purpose of the research is to systematise the sources of the plots of stories from Leo Tolstoy’s “Alphabet”. The history of studying “Alphabet” and its role in the writer’s creative work are also consi-dered. Scientific novelty of the paper lies in presenting a theoretical understanding of “Alphabet” as an em¬bodiment of the global literary and cultural heritage. Examples of a creative rewriting of classic plots into new author’s stories are given by way of illustration. As a result, it has been found that Leo Tolstoy’s “Alphabet”, which was created on the basis of various folklore, Russian classical, oriental and European plots, is an authentic anthology of world literature aimed at children’s audiences.
