Abstract

The objective this work is to identify and review the lexical-semantic system of the concept «disease» on the material of the L.N. Tolstoy’s novel «The Death of Ivan Ilyich». This goal dictates the need to address more specific objectives: identify key words that represent concepts of «disease» in the text; on a material of Russian language dictionaries to define the lexical meaning of words to illustrate the physical and psychological state of the hero of the story and description of the characteristics of their semantics and functioning in the text of the work. The scientific novelty of this article is determined by the fact that the lexical-semantic system of the concept «disease» was first identified and analyzed on the example of Leo Tolstoy›s novel «The Death of Ivan Ilyich» The analysis considered the text tokens, which illustrate the physical and mental suffering of L.N. Tolstoy’s hero . They implement a common language and the individual, the author senses. Keywords representing in the novel concept of «disease», identified and divided it into several lexical-semantic groups. The basic techniques that Tolstoy uses for a detailed description of the picture of the last three months of life of Ivan Ilyich are also considered. In conclusion it should be noted, that the token that characterize the physical and emotional state of the hero during his illness and before his death, many of which are not linked in dictionaries, combined into one line in the text, lead to an understanding of the story and show one of the faces of the concept «disease» in the works of L.N. Tolstoy.
