Abstract

Although demands of global technology transfer have been expanded, extant studies tend to focus on the national or industry level and are still limited to describing firm-level technology transfer. This paper aims to identify behaviors of the global technology acquisition strategy of 89 Korean companies by analyzing TBP(Technology Balances of Payment) data which records disembodied technological asset flows. Based on four indicators such as activeness, concentration, persistence, and dependence on external technology, firms’ technology acquisition strategy can be clustered into four types: classmate, shy guy, opportunist, and outgoing person. In addition, this paper contributes to a practical understanding of firms’ global technology acquisition behaviors and provides implications for determining innovation policy directions or firms
