Abstract

This is the fi rst publication of the letters by Oszkar Asboth, a Hungarian Slavicist, to Ivan Franko referring to the writing and publishing of his review of the history of Ukrainian literature for a Hungarian encyclopaedic edition. It has been highlighted that the most interesting point in these letters is the fact that prior to this, an entry on Russian literature had been prepared, Ukrainian literature being allegedly non-existent for Hungarian publishers. The necessity of writing an outline on Ukrainian authors was advised to the publishers, in particular to Oszkar Asboth, by renowned Polish scholar Aleksander Bruckner (1856–1939), born in Ternopil region and educated at Lviv University at the time Franko was a student there. Keywords: letter, epistolary legacy, encyclopaedic edition, Slavistics.
