Abstract

The article discusses the issues of formation of national identity in the CIS countries. The author pays important attention to state historical policy, which has an effective influence on the definition of a new ideology, public consciousness, and the creation of post-Soviet political institutions. The article analyzes the transformation of national history, its adaptation to the interests of the ruling national elites to solve their internal political problems. The fundamental method of new interpretation of historical knowledge was mythologization, which confirmed all the main events and phenomena of the past. The author gives numerous examples of the introduction of postcolonial discourse into the historical consciousness of the population, the formation of a negative perception of the Soviet period of history; explores issues of justification by Commonwealth countries of their belonging to European identity.
