Abstract

The article focuses on residents of Shumen who graduated from Kyiv educational institutions in the period 1878-1912. After the Liberation, 12 young men and women from Shumen studied in Kiev. The largest number of them studied dentistry – 5/ Anika Sp. Kusheva, Yordanka Kaldaramova, Nevena Slavova, Dosya Yanakieva, Andrey Sermov/. One of them, Iliya P. Dyugmedzhiev, studied at a military school, Svetlana Todorova studied pedagogy, three other studied medicine /Drumi V. Drumev, Dimitar S. Stamatov, Pavel P. Hristov/, two choose theology – Preslav Dobroplodni and Ivan P. Zlatarov. The paper discusses the significance of the city of Kiev for the formation of Bulgarian intelligentsia after the Liberation. It should be noted that Shumen residents were included in the medical group that laid the foundations of Bulgarian dentistry, obstetrics and gynecology. Voynikova and Dobroplodni contributed to the development of Bulgarian pedagogy and journalism with their periodicals. All Shumen youth, albeit for a short time, returned to their native Shumen, but then decided to share their knowledge and experience on a national level and thus contributed to the modernization of the Third Bulgarian State, being in no way inferior to the Western European graduates in their realization.
