The paper elaborates on maritime tourism, i.e. cruising and yachting, in the Mediterranean Basin. Today, although maritime tourism is dynamically gaining ground in many Mediterranean cities, there is no specific regulatory framework for it yet, apart from European Union’s recommendations, aiming at motivating countries to promote tourist development. The paper addresses the subject of maritime tourism by reviewing and analyzing the current or future implications that this sector has or may bring upon Mediterranean cities through three relevant examples, two from the island of Crete (Heraklion and Chania), and one from the island of Cyprus (Limassol). More specifically, through case study work, existing links of maritime tourism to the reality of the city; the benefits and drawbacks that the sector can have on the local economy; and its potential for future development are explored. The three case studies indicate that in order to maximize the benefits gained from maritime tourism by local societies and economies, a certain strategic planning framework should be established, broadening the interaction of maritime and land activities. Such a framework should be enriched by Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) principles as well as Information and Communication Technologies’ (ICT) potential, steering “Smart” Tourism Development (STD) and fulfilling sustainability objectives i.e. marine and land environmental protection, spatial and social cohesion, as well as economic development of coastal Mediterranean cities.

The paper investigates the question - provocative in some way – can Polish ports in the Pomeranian Region, especially Gdynia and Gdańsk, become centers of maritime tourism in the region? This question is worth to be asked, despite distinct disparency - arousing pessimism - between expectations and the real state. The significance of that question is grounded in ports’ role in development of passengers transportation – particularly tourist one, and the impact of ports services on regions’ economy in Europe. These problems are exposed at the beginning of the paper. Further parts of the paper – taking advantage of descriptive and statistical comparative analysis of the ports operation - successively present: (1) general condition of the Pomeranian ports regarding their tourist function. It particularly has been related to the location and transport accessibility requirements as well as to ports suprastructure and infrastructure requirements. The presented conditions are compared with standards effective worldwide; (2) passenger traffic in the Pomeranian ports – especially tourist traffic. General assessment of development conditions, present situation and position of the Pomeranian ports, which have been made on the grounds of the above analysis, lead to the conclusion that these ports, including the main ports of Gdańsk and Gdynia, are far behind a status of important maritime tourism centers. The last part of the paper – in connection to the former assessment – defines challenges facing the above ports and presents actions to be taken for strengthening their position. In search of ways enabling achievement of an advisable goal, the position of government administration and local authorities have been stressed, as well as the effects of Polish membership in the EU.

Maritime tourism in its numerous forms (rapidly developing in the world) has direct impacts on coastal formation and development. As such it has become one of the most important areas of investigation. Among the many varieties of maritime tourism, due to its increasing availability and popularity, nautical tourism, which has recently had a strong influence on the multifaceted Polish coast, deserves special attention. However, due to the natural formation of coasts they are not adapted for most forms of marine tourism. Western Pomerania is a region considered suitable for nautical tourism which is characterized by its unique nature. In addition to its peripheral location, the area is protected from intense urbanization, and at the same time has managed to avoid engaging into investments that could have radically caused the deterioration of the landscape and cultural values of the region. Properly planned activities for the development of maritime tourism can adequately stimulate the spatial expansion of individual municipalities, often changing their existing character and a leading function. The aim of the article is to illustrate the determinants of the proper (past and future) development of coastal towns in the context of the expansion of maritime tourism (especially nautical), with particular emphasis on landscape and cultural aspects, on the example of a selected locality in the Western Pomerania region. As part of the research, the marine tourism potential in the Western Pomerania region, its landscape and cultural aspects concerning maritime tourism development, as well as the analysis of historical and spatial conditions for the location and concentration of nautical tourism activity in the Dziwnów area were identified. This seaside resort, which was selected as part of the research, is characterized by above-average potential of aquatic development and its local, maritime tradition. On the basis of the analyses carried out on the spatial structure of Dziwnów it was found that the village is a model example of tourism synergy of inland and in marine water area. The research included interpretative and historical studies, and the inventory of urban, architectural and landscape elements – essential for the development of nautical tourism, as well as the municipal strategy and field observations. Apart from the aspects related to the nature for the development of nautical tourism, the cultural values of the village, its local traditions and continuity of development of the tourist-oriented function also play a crucial role. The origins of the village date back to the transformation of the original fishing village into a summer resort, then a seaside resort, a post-war spa town – the Kamień Pomorski satellite, into a modern base of organized tourism.

The Caspian Basin, a geopolitically complex maritime region, holds significant potential for sustainable tourism. This study critically assesses barriers and opportunities in maritime tourism development, using a mixed-method approach that integrates Porter’s Diamond Model, the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI), and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Findings reveal that policy fragmentation, infrastructural gaps, and ecological concerns hinder growth. However, cross-border cooperation and unified regional branding are identified as key drivers of tourism competitiveness. By presenting an empirically grounded roadmap, this research provides policymakers and industry stakeholders with strategic recommendations to elevate the Caspian Basin’s position as a globally competitive maritime tourism hub. The purpose of this study is to assess the competitiveness of regional tourism products in the Caspian Basin. The key objectives are to analyse factors influencing tourism development, examine the potential of the Caspian Tourism Corridor and Silk Road Heritage for joint regional branding, and propose strategic recommendations for cross-border collaboration and sustainable maritime tourism growth. This study applies a mixed-methods approach, combining Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, adapted TTCI and Porter’s Diamond models, and qualitative stakeholder interviews. Data were drawn from TTCI reports, national statistics, and expert insights to assess the competitiveness and collaborative potential of Caspian Basin tourism. The study reveals striking asymmetries in tourism competitiveness across the Caspian region, visualized through a custom radar chart and strategic mapping tools. Stakeholder insights expose deep-rooted barriers and untapped synergies, particularly around digital transformation and eco-tourism. Integrating the Silk Road legacy and maritime connectivity into a unified branding strategy – structured via the Tourism Branding Strategy Matrix and visual project management – emerges as a game-changing opportunity to reposition the Caspian as a globally competitive cultural corridor. The study confirms that sustainability-focused policies and a unified Silk Road branding strategy are vital for strengthening the Caspian Basin’s tourism competitiveness. Structured project management and coordinated governance emerge as key drivers for sustainable, inclusive, and resilient tourism development.

Maritime tourism is a niche market that provides maritime nations with an additional source of foreign exchange and employments. However, due to a lack of awareness of the significance of the maritime tourism sector, a very few studies have investigated the problems faced by this sub sector. Therefore, this paper aimed to identify the problems faced by the maritime tourism industry and propose solutions with which to overcome these obstacles. A bibliometric analysis technique was used to scour databases, such as Scopus and Web of Science (WoS); with VOS Viewer. The content analysis was carried out and then coded using QSR International's NVivo 12. The paper found that the maritime tourism industry is currently plagued by six major problem clusters. These were classified as (a) governmental and political supports, (b) environmental issues, (c) cooperation among stakeholders, (d) maritime tourism law and policies, (e) technological matters, and (f) maritime tourism knowledge. Therefore, this present study proposes the development of a new market; the smart maritime tourism market; which is the most effective and efficient approach of overcoming the current issues. It is believed that smart maritime tourism will not only benefit maritime nations but also adjacent landlocked nations.
