Abstract

The article provides an analytical overview of massive open online courses (MOOCs) devoted to William Shakespeare, as well as to England of his times or the historical England he described. We look at courses in either English or Russian which appeared on mainstream MOOC platforms (FutureLearn, edX, Coursera) in 2014–2015. The rising practice of Shakespearean MOOCs is a reflection of new dimensions of the Shakespearean sphere as a field of phenomena in the global culture, local cultures and subcultures which are in this or that way linked to the name and works of William Shakespeare.
