Abstract

There are not so many photographs left that are related to the Korean Independence Movement. Moreover, they have not been systematically organized to date, which makes it difficult to accurately grasp the existent aspect and the circumstance of those photographs. In addition, studies on photographs from a historical point of view have not been properly conducted. Therefore, I would like to propose an analytic study on historical photographs. The analytic study on historical photographs defines photographs as one of the main sources of history, and it can be said to be a concept that includes historical analysis of the time of photography, the photographer, and the content of a photograph.
In the case of the Independence Movement, it is necessary to sequentially collect, organize and rephotograph numerous pictures attached to the historical records at Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. In addition, photographs from sources such as newspapers, magazines, postcards, prisoner record cards, and school graduation albums should be actively collected. It is also judged to be necessary to collect various photo albums published by the Japanese military, various Japanese invasion agencies and individuals as reference materials. If these works are done, it will be of great help to organizing the photographs of the Korean Independence Movement. Along with those efforts, attention should be paid to the collection of videos from the era, too.
Although limited in scope, this paper, first of all, reviews the photographs related to the Independence Movement on History Net of the National Institute of Korean History. Next, it endeavors to find out the circumstantial conditions of the photographs, focusing on cases such as the Battle of Qingshanli in Manchuria, Gando Disaster and the March 1 Independence Movement, and the Jeamri Massacre. It could be verified in these cases that they were also used without specific criticism on historical data.
