Abstract

The study aims to determine the content of religious activities in places of detention, to identify and formulate its main constituent elements. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the author’s systematisation of the entire population of prisoners with whom prison ministers interact. The author notionally divided this community into four groups: people of the same faith, adherents of other faiths, atheists, persons who are indifferent to religion; identified specificity of religious activities with respect to each group. The interrelation of such phenomena as “religious advertising” and “missionary work” in the context of prison ministry is shown. The significance of ministers’ main method of working with prisoners, namely persuasion through dialogue, is substantiated. As a result of the study, the author has identified the main elements of prison ministry, determined their content.
