Abstract

The presented article discusses the attested forms of the word “hare” in old, middle and new Iranian languages. It has been shown that, except for some Eastern Iranian languages, the attested and still used forms are lexical innovations, which are a result of the tabooisation of inherited archaic form. An attempt is made to show the inherited Iranian form of Indo-European origin, which was used for the zoonym "hare" before its tabooisation and reduction of the use of geography.
