Abstract

The article provides a culturological and religious studies analysis of number 1000 (one thousand) and its non-numeric connotations. The authors consider numbers as iconic symbols that are used by people in everyday life, as well as in different religions and cultures. A separate research interest is the mention of numbers in the verses of the Qur’an and the way they are in-terpreted by commentators of the Holy Scripture, for example, numbers seven, one hundred, two hundred and others. The research is aimed at analyzing the cultural and religious meanings of number one thousand (1,000) and its multiples mentioned in the Qur’an. Number one thou-sand is mentioned eight times in the Qur’an. For example, in its first mention in Surah 2 ayat 96, it is suggested that the Quranic number “a thousand” (a thousand years) symbolizes the longest life, since number 1,000 in Arabic is the last range of numbers in terms of a numerical unit. There are separate Quranic mentions of numbers symbolizing something very long or expressing the power of believers. Thus, in its different connotations, number one thousand in the Qur'an contains a different semantic and symbolic load: large and centralized power, longevity, long-term survival, multiplicity, integrity, etc. The authors consider the non-numerical (symbolic) meaning of number one thousand and its multiples, as they are used in the Holy Scriptures of Muslims, from the perspective of various religions and cultures.
