Abstract

Objectives This study investigated the mediating effects of parenting styles of mothers in the relationships between marital conflict and self-esteem of young children.
 Methods Data were collected from 200 children and their mothers. Statistical methods used for data analysis were correlational analysis and regression analysis.
 Results The results of this study revealed that marital conflict of mothers had negative effects on nurturant and autonomy-encouraging parenting styles. Mothers’ nurturant and autonomy-encouraging parenting styles were found to have positive influences on self-esteem of young children. Regression analysis showed that nurturant and autonomy-encouraging parenting styles of mothers mediated the relationship between marital conflict and self-esteem of children.
 Conclusions This study suggested the importance of improving marital relationships and parenting styles of mothers for developing self-esteem of young children.
