Abstract

A short excursion into the history of the European tapestry allows reminding the various methods of using tapestries in historical interiors of different historical periods, the role of tapestry in the USSR and in the post-Soviet territories.
 The article analyzes the problems that led to the paradoxical situation that has developed in Russia when the number of artists specializing in creating tapestries after graduation from universities becomes more and more, but they remain not in demand.
 Possible ways of using traditional tapestry and actual textile forms in modern interior design are suggested.
 The problem of terminology is also discussed, which is now especially acute in all cultural areas.
